Steven Takes it to the Next Level

DWI’s Extended Work Services (EWS) program offers vocational training and paid work to many individuals who may not have had the opportunity or the success working within the greater community.  Goals and objectives for those in the program can range from following directions on up to learning how to operate a sewing machine.

Steven entered the EWS program at DWI just over 6 months ago.  Since then, he has gained experience in ironing, sewing, assembling cartons and riveting.  Reflecting on his time working on the production floor, Steven said, “Everyday can be different and it is fun to learn jobs.  I used to clean up at an Auto Shop, but here I am learning and getting better at new things”

Before entering the program, Steven wasn’t working and was home playing video games, which he still enjoys.  “I needed to do something to make money to pay for gas to take trips and for new video games.”  His Targeted Service Coordinator (TSC), at that time, suggested that he explore what DWI had to offer.  The program fit into his schedule allowing him to choose from available days and shifts.”

Steven has become proficient on a sewing machine that makes sandbags for the U.S. Government (through the Ability One and General Services Administration programs), despite never having worked with one before. “Sometimes I learn when I sleep at night, repeating the steps that I was shown.”

He also found that some tasks, like ironing, was a source of frustration for him.  But his love of video games helps him move on to another task.  Production Supervisor Francine says that she uses video game terminology to help Steven focus on something new.  “I say, okay, you finished Level 1, now onto Level 2” mimicking most gaming environments.

He also plays Semi Pro football and proudly showed off his Championship Rings, having won two Championships in the last 3 years.

For anyone who may consider DWI for the EWS program Steven says “The people here are kind and they make the work fun.  And the work could change every day, so it doesn’t get boring”

DWI is pleased to offer this program, providing training for those who wish to move into employment in the greater community or choose to stay within the program and earn their income.
